Relaxing the upgrade requirements

I’d like some feedback on this one. It seems the “upgrades” are not all 100% intuitive. (CL-13 -> Valdore|Larson -> Ferengi|DY-600 -> Sphere, etc…) I’ve known this, but I wasn’t sure exactly what to do about it until now.

I’m proposing that upgrades simply require a starting ship of the same race/affiliation. ie, any federation ship can get a galaxy/defiant or any klingon ship can get a vorcha/kbop/d10. This would also allow for multiple upgrades if for example, you buy a D-10 but later decide you’d rather have a vorcha.

Certain classes, for which there is no starting class of the same race/affiliation (borg, ferengi) would be available to any class.

Also, a word on new classes: Several of the folks who played on for a while, have asked for some of the classes which were only available on that server. Particularly, the Klingon D7, the Vulcan ship, the Keldon/Neghhvar(or another low-vis variant), the Jem’Hadar, and one or two others.

I’m not strictly opposed to adding some new classes here, but I think it should be done carefully and over a period of time. That way we can focus on each class for a short while, and make sure the balance fits with everything else going on here. Either way, I’d like some more discussion before going forward with anything along these lines. (new classes)

So, back to the main subject of this post. Would any of you be opposed to the relaxed upgrade requirements I’ve explained above? Any different ideas altogether?
