Version 5.0.0

Written by  on April 22, 2015

5.0 has finally arrived.

First, Thank You, to all the players! Your help, patience, testing, and valuable feedback has been crucial to the success of mtrek.com since the very beginning. Without you, the game simply wouldn’t be here.

The scores have been reset and we are now entering day 1 of a new 365-day, No-Reset, No-Update* Cycle. Throughout the year, there will be promotions, events, and challenges. Also on the horizon, is a renewed ad campaign to help boost up the playerbase.
*Of course things like bug fixes and bot patches will occur… This, unfortunately, cannot be avoided. But for the next 365 days at least, Gameplay, Mechanics, and Balance will not be touched.

There is still a bit of website tidying-up to do: The documentation update is well underway now. A new bug-tracker will be added to the homepage for some transparency and peace of mind. The website’s scoreboards and stats-pages will see some improvement to complement the new split-quadrant game. All 5 quadrant maps can now be found on the “maps” tab at the top of each mtrek.com page. Coming soon, there will also be downloadable lists of planets/bases for each quadrant as well.

Thanks and stay tuned!

The new game is a hoot!

Saw the stats on the ship “Frang”. Now, how could I do that much damage in 3 conflicts?
I’m thinking about it… maybe I could do it if I played the bots a certain way… not sure.

    Well, anyway, fun new game.

I believe he is exploiting a bug in the robot AI which causes the excel/dy600/sphere to not xwarp away when they should.

The logs indicate a pattern consistent with a player chasing a DY-600 at around 1100 distance and plinking the DY with (regenerating) obliterator torps for very extended periods of time.

While it is expressly against the rules to exploit and/or fail to report bugs, the fact that the flaw lies within the robot AI kind of puts this incident in a “grey area” . Taking advantage of this flaw certainly isn’t within the spirit of the game, but the game mechanics allow it to happen on a single connection- so it isn’t 100% accurate to label the behavior as “cheating”…

That all said, I think this falls into roughly the same category as fleeting / suiciding / peace-breaking… So not quite blatant cheating, but dern close and unsportsmanlike to boot.

I was playing in delta quad and noticed that a br-5 bot could
track me while I was cloaked!

    Is this new?

    Thanks.

They have some intuitive processes- that is to say, they are smart enough (occasionally) to stop at your last visible position, last message received xyz etc, or even “ping” you with a wide phasers… But as far as I know, they don’t “see” cloaked ships, unless of course you are being actively tracked by an observer device- and there are no observers in delta.

      I’ll investigate πŸ™‚

The game is great! I also noticed that especially Excels do not xwarp away, when I expected them to do so. I also noticed a few very minor, well, maybe bugs, may be intentional changes. First, federation ships may resupply antimatter at Gorn. Second, the beep when you receive a msg is gone. The beep is still there when your cloak is getting low, so its still working. For, this one, could we get the beep back?

Hi Pete, thanks for the comments- yes, the Gorn AM thing is a bug but should be good to go with the next server restart. I’m working on the beep issue. The community seems pretty divided on whether beeps are good/bad/annoying/whatever… I disabled the majority of them in response to complaints that the “disable” feature of the esc-o options page was broken. (and has been since 2012 or earlier) I know: that’s not a real fix, but there might be a compromise of sorts to allow some beeps and disallow others until the toggle on esc-o is fixed… more to come on that one

Any chance of getting the old logo back or maybe a new logo? Maybe even a competition?

    • Avatar mtrek.com says:

Apologies, I never meant the Romulan Empire thingy to be offensive or distasteful… The welcome screen is a simple text file, so it is easy enough to change. I might very well swap it back to the Federation ship- but first, I’m wondering, did you have something specific (different) in mind for the logo, or are you just opposed to the current one..?

      thanks
