Update 11.1.0

Written by  on June 3, 2020

Our first (and hopefully only) *major* balance revision for Ver 11:

Ship Selection Screen: (this is the major part)

We’re cutting the lineup deep. Twelve ship classes are being removed, based on much data gathered from before and after Ver 11 went live. In short, these are some of the most unpopular and underperforming ship classes ever. It’s true that some of them offered interesting elements for gameplay, but largely, the respective play-style niches they occupied were already being filled by other more viable classes. I doubt many of these ships will be missed at all. Whatever game enhancement they might have provided, was mostly overshadowed by the fact that there were simply too many ships to pick from (for new and old players alike). Only a very small number of living ships in the database were affected by these removals, and a change like this will be way less painful this early in the cycle.

Ship Balance Adjustments:

After chatting with some of you and spending a considerable amount of time pondering, it became very clear that a “playable ship” can be far more important to the game than one that remains strictly faithful to the “classic MTrek” for no other reason than posterity.

  • D-10 & D-11 Will once again be offered cloaks, but this time they’ll be Vor’Cha-style Klingon cloaks, and as a result, will be more suited to the energy consumption of the Klingon archetype. If a cloaking D-10/11 is an affront to anyone’s classic sensibilities, the journey to have it installed at Klinzhai is entirely optional.
  • CDA-180 can now pick up a non-Tracking Transwarp from Cardassia.
  • Galaxy is catching a slight buff with torpedo regen, and Intrepid is getting a little bit of a nerf. The rest of the ships are almost completely unaltered.

Economy Adjustments

The gold-rates were tuned a little further- particularly to account for ships that are either very expensive or very cheap to operate.

  • Since all the remaining 36 ship classes are now in a much narrower power/viability balance band, the gold earning rates have been flattened across the board. There are now fewer ships earning excessively high or low amounts of gold-per-damagegiven.

You can view the ship specs page here:

Ship Classes

And that about sums it up for this patch. Of course I’ll continue to monitor the game closely as we get it more dialed in for the long run, and I welcome your feedback and support always.

Version 11.0.0

Version 11 has arrived!

It’s been about 850 days since the last major game update. Here’s a breakdown of what’s changed (and some things that haven’t changed).

  • The scores have NOT been reset. All of your old ships are still alive. (UPDATE: this is no longer the case. Based on feedback from a majority of players, the scoreboard has been reset.)
  • The entire pool of ships has been re-balanced. Some of your old macros might require adjustment. Updated ship class specs can be found here: http://mtrek.com/guides/ship-classes/
  • The quadrant maps have changed to a classic/standard layout, and can be found here: http://mtrek.com/guides/maps/
  • The economy has slowed somewhat and the bots roam across a much larger galaxy.
  • There is a forum post where you can ask questions, report bugs, or simply discuss the update in general here: http://mtrek.com/?post_type=topic&p=7955

Thanks!

Version 9.0.0

Written by  on May 13, 2017

Happy Birthday, MTrek.com!

It’s been 30 years since the original MTrek was written by clp, almost 5 years since the launch of this mtrek.com server, and just over 2 years since the last score wipe.

Version 9

To mark this passing of time, the game has been updated to a “Classic” 1990’s version of the game… but with a few twists and easter eggs. For those of you who have gotten addicted to the ultra-powerful ships, worry not. Over time, unlocks and discoveries will be made to add depth to the game. Expansions will be released. If it seems like these hidden features need it, I’ll “help” the process along. There will also be challenges or special events with in-game rewards like we’ve seen a few years ago.

So please don’t be discouraged by the vanilla appearance on the surface of the game. Rather, take this opportunity to enjoy the “original” as it was when most of us started playing. Soon enough, the more contemporary ships and features will rise to the surface again. For the Banana Slugs out there, obviously yours was an even earlier incarnation. I settled on the 1997-ish version because it was arguably the most balanced, and 1997 was about the peak of mtrek’s popularity in terms of how many active players we had. Choosing that period also allows us to expand both forward and backwards.

Score Wipe

If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you’ve already noticed that all the ships are gone! Those hours spent building fleets and earning gold haven’t been wasted. The final scores have been preserved, and players’ ranks / cumulative scores will continue to be tracked on individual player pages (that’s where you click a player’ name on http://mtrek.com/scoreboard/stats). For whatever it’s worth, filling up a new scoreboard is one of the most entertaining parts of the game and we have quite a few powerhouse players who will be competing for that #1 spot. Game on 🙂

In Thanks

Finally, I’d like to thank all of the players who continue to play, making this all worthwhile. A Special Thanks goes out to Jay Ashworth and Joe Hopkinson, who wrote the JavaTrek game engine powering mtrek.com. I also have to thank Tim Wisseman for coming up with some of the earliest concepts for the game, and of course Chuck L. Peterson, who Created and maintained our favorite game for years. RIP clp

Version 7.5.0

Written by  on November 18, 2016

The game has recently been updated to include the JavaTrek-era ships:

  • KBOP
  • GALOR
  • BR-2000
  • SCOUT
  • INTERCEPTOR
  • DEFIANT
  • FERENGI
  • D-10
  • VORCHA (upgrade, KEV-12, 5k @ Klinzhai)
  • VALDORE (upgrade, RBOP, 5k @ Romulus)
  • GALAXY (upgrade, II-A, 5k @ Earth)
  • AVG IX (upgrade, any ship, 1k @ Iridium)

Stability improvements:

  • The game will automatically shut down and restart every 24 hours (at Midnight Eastern Standard Time).
  • Before auto-restarts, an in-game alert will remind players that a server restart is imminent. (at the 1hr prior, 30min prior, and every 5min mark thereafter until the restart occurs)
  • Players should make every effort to save valuable ships at a starbase before the restart occurs to avoid losing progress/score.
  • If the entire server goes down for some reason, there is now a script to automatically restart the game upon reboot

Apologies for the downtime and inconvenience. It’s my hope that these changes are an improvement for everyone. Thanks!
